Low patronage characterizes sale of garri following link with Lassa Fever
The belief in some quarters that Nigerians should stop
drinking garri to avoid the spread of Lassa fever has started affecting
the sales of garri in Benin Metropolis . Lassa fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic illness caused by Lassa
virus, a member of the
arenavirus family of viruses. It is transmitted
to humans from contacts with food or household items contaminated with
rodent excreta. The disease is endemic in the rodent population in parts of west africa
garri(also known as gari, garry, gali, or tapioca) is a popular West African food made from cassava tubers. The spelling 'garri' is mainly used in Cameroon, Sierra Leone, Benin, Togo and 'gari' in Ghana.
